The 2021 CLS Program cohort comprises 685 American students representing 261 institutions across the United States, including public and private universities, liberal arts colleges, minority-serving institutions, military academies, and community colleges. This year’s scholars hail from 49 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and Puerto Rico.
We are proud of the diverse range of American students who are selected to participate on the CLS Program each summer, which contributes to the program’s broad impact in American communities.
The CLS Program is part of a U.S. government effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages. CLS scholars gain critical language and cultural skills that enable them to contribute to U.S. economic competitiveness and national security. CLS is a program of the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. It is supported in its implementation by American Councils for International Education.
