CLS Alumnus Begins Life as Rhodes Scholar

Kolter Stevenson, a Critical Language Scholarship alumnus (Russian 2022), has begun his graduate studies as a Rhodes Scholar. He was selected as one of only 32 students from around the country for the 2024 Rhodes Scholarship, which is widely regarded as the world's premier international scholarship. Now studying at Oxford University, one of the leading institutions in the United Kingdom and the world, Kolter credits his CLS experience as pivotal in his path to becoming a Rhodes Scholar: “CLS absolutely influenced my decision to apply for the Rhodes Scholarship! The entire experience of improving my Russian language skills, exploring Central Asia, and engaging with the energy sector solidified my goals of working to improve sustainability and renewable energy in Central Asia.”

Before participating in the CLS Russian Program in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, Kolter was engaged in an energy-related project at the University of Montana and curious about Central Asian affairs. “The CLS Program provided me the opportunity to conduct a project utilizing my Russian language skills,” he shared. Kolter’s CLS language partner introduced him to the unique challenges Kyrgyzstan faces in managing aging energy infrastructure while transitioning to renewable sources. “The final project required a substantial amount of effort, as researching, translating and adapting Russian words and terms was truly an endeavor,” he explained.

Reflecting on his experience, Kolter expressed his gratitude for CLS: “I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to improve my language skills with an amazing cohort [...] I highly encourage students from all backgrounds to apply for the CLS and experience firsthand the massive language gains, cultural engagement, and friendships fueled through the program.
