Catherine (Cate) Shields will be placed in Baku, Azerbaijan, this summer at the Azerbaijani University of Languages to learn approximately one academic year’s worth of university-level Turkish during an eight-week period.
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) welcomed representatives from Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the American Institute in Taiwan, Taiwan’s Ministry of Education, NCKU’s Office of International Affairs, and NCKU’s College of Liberal Arts for the CLS Tainan program’s opening ceremony.
CLS Japanese students were featured on TV in their first week in Japan. NHK (Nippon Hoso Kyokai) is Japan's national public broadcasting organization and CLS Japanese program was recently highlighted by NHK Okayama news. The report included the opening ceremony with welcoming remarks from Okayama University President Dr. Hirofumi Makino. CLS students also introduced themselves in Japanese.

She volunteered at an integrated camp for Jewish and Arab children in the Palestinian territories, landed a Critical Language Scholarship to study Arabic in Morocco this summer and, come fall, will teach English to children in Spain as a Fulbright student.
