The CLS Russian Program in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan is hosted by the American University of Central Asia (AUCA). Formal classroom instruction focuses on developing all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) through a range of methods including reading texts from different genres, participating in discussions, and learning about pop culture. In addition to their Russian language courses, students also receive an introduction to the Kyrgyz language which helps them to navigate the city and communicate respectfully with members of their host community.
Cultural excursions, lectures, and other enrichment activities are designed to support and enhance language learning and deepen students’ understanding of the host culture. Activities that students may enjoy in Bishkek include visiting the Gapar Aitiev Fine Arts Museum, attending a concert at the Kyrgyz State Philharmonic Hall, learning about traditional handicrafts such as felt rugs, and exploring the mountains that provide a stunning backdrop to the city.
Students in Bishkek live with host families in apartment buildings or private homes. Students can expect to spend considerable time with their host families, eating breakfast and dinner together most days as well as relaxing on the weekend. Past students have spent time with their host families together going on picnics, celebrating birthdays, strolling the tree-lined boulevards of the capital city, and discussing family and regional histories.
