Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro
The CLS Portuguese Program in Rio de Janeiro is hosted by Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), a private, Jesuit Catholic university founded in 1941. The PUC-Rio campus is located in Gávea in the south of Rio de Janeiro, at the edge of Tijuca National Forest. The academic program helps students improve their skills in reading, writing, speaking, phonetics, and listening comprehension across a variety of formal and informal situations.
Outside of the classroom, students participate in a variety of cultural activities and excursions which explore the rich culture and history of Rio de Janeiro and deepen their understanding of Brazil’s unique blend of cultures. Activities in the past have included attending festivals, visiting local businesses, and meeting with guest speakers.
Participants live with host families to gain insight into daily life and contemporary Brazilian culture. Students may also spend free weekends with families, getting to know their extended networks, exploring Rio’s many beautiful natural areas, and practicing Portuguese in a more relaxed setting.
