The CLS Chinese Program in Tainan is hosted by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). Established in 1931, NCKU is one of Taiwan’s leading research universities and is well-regarded for its programs in science and technology. The academic program provides students opportunities to improve their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Through independent research on self-selected topics, students synthesize their learning in the final oral presentation where previous students have covered topics such as cross-strait relations, Confucian influences in Taiwan, and Taiwan’s business strategies.
Cultural excursions and activities supplement the academic program, highlighting the region’s rich cultural heritage and modern high-tech economy. Previous activities have included trips to HerMin Textile Museum and sessions on traditional Chinese medicine and Taiwan’s healthcare system, offering insight into Taiwanese contributions to science and medicine while reinforcing language learning through hands-on experiences.
Students live with host families, allowing them to practice Chinese while developing meaningful relationships and insight into Taiwan and its culture. During their free time, past students have played Mahjongg, visited historic temples, enjoyed food at night markets, and hiked the coastal wetlands and fertile plains.
