Critical Language Scholarship Program | Tangier, Morocco

Tangier, Morocco

Program Dates:

June 08 - August 07, 2026

Hosting Institution:

Arab American Language Institute in Morocco

The CLS Arabic Program in Tangier is administered in partnership with the Arab American Language Institute in Morocco (AALIM), a private institution accredited by the Moroccan Ministry of Education.  In the academic program, instructors take an interactive approach that supports the development of students’ language skills in all areas.  The majority of classroom hours are devoted to the study of Modern Standard Arabic, but students also learn the local Maghrebi Arabic dialect, known as Darija.  To further develop their speaking ability, students have regular one-on-one meetings with language partners where they converse about Moroccan society and culture.

Outside of formal classes, the CLS Tangier Program includes cultural activities that complement the academic program.  In the past, these activities have included learning to cook traditional Moroccan tagine and calligraphy workshops.  Spending the summer in Tangier gives students the opportunity to explore traditional souks and visit historical sites such as the Kasbah which overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar.

In Tangier, students live with host families where they practice Arabic outside of class and experience life in a Moroccan family.  Students share meals with their families every day, which allows them to gain insight into Moroccan culture and develop close bonds with their families.
