Critical Language Scholarship Program | Harrison Worden

Harrison Worden

Harrison Worden participated in the 2024 CLS Indonesian Program, hosted by Universitas Negeri Malang in Malang, Indonesia. Alongside studying Indonesian, he is currently pursuing a BSE in electrical engineering at Arizona State University, where he intends on specializing in integrated circuit design.

Why Indonesian?

Indonesia's strategic position as a crossroads of global trade has led its many cultures to absorb a diverse array of influences from across the Nusantara archipelago and worldwide. I was fascinated by this exceptional celebration of "unity in diversity", so I participated in CLS to study Indonesian: the common thread that unites the nation, from Sabang to Merauke.

A Favorite Word

Gemes—an informal word for the fuzzy feeling you feel when you see something exceptionally cute.

Career Goals

After graduating, I intend on pursuing a career in integrated circuit chip design. As Southeast Asia plays an increasingly key role in the electronics supply chain, I believe that studying Indonesian in additional to technical skills will prove valuable.

CLS’s Impact

CLS allowed me to experience the world through a different lens. This is incredibly useful for prospective engineers, as our solutions must be tailored to the needs of a wide range of potential end users, not simply those of the engineers themselves.
