Dear CLS Advisor,
In recent years, CLS has had two different categories for advisors: principal and campus. We are excited to share that beginning this cycle all CLS Advisors will share the same set of responsibilities and that each institution can have an unlimited number of CLS advisors. Higher education institutions in the United States range from small community colleges to large state universities with multiple campuses. CLS Advisors come from language departments, study abroad offices, fellowships offices, honors colleges, and more. We believe that this change will allow campuses more flexibility based on their unique structure and context and increase the number of individuals ready to help students apply for CLS.
As a result of this change, all advisors must now agree to the following:
- Advocate for and promote the CLS Program on campus, both to students and to other faculty members and administrators;
- Support students in applying for the award by making themselves available to meet with students, answering student questions, offering feedback on application materials, and helping them decide whether to accept or decline a CLS award offer;
- Stay up to date on application and program requirements; and
- Serve as a point of contact for staff from the CLS Program and the U.S. Department of State for outreach efforts.
Furthermore, all CLS Advisors will now be given access to our online applicant portal where we offer a limited amount of information about the applicants on your campus. As there may be multiple staff or faculty on your campus who have access to this information, please take care to collaborate with others on your campus when reaching out to applicants.
