Program Overview

The CLS Program’s virtual programming in 2021 comprises approximately 20 hours of language activities per week, including:

  • 10 hours of face-to-face (synchronous) small group class
  • 10-15 hours of synchronous and asynchronous activities:
    • Individual feedback sessions with instructors
    • Asynchronous instruction, such as reviewing video recordings
    • Cultural activities
    • Individual and group homework assignments
    • Directed independent study
    • Regular meetings with a language partner for conversation practice

The Chinese program in Xi’an is hosted by Shaanxi Normal University (SNNU). First established in 1944, SNNU now consists of 16 colleges which offer 65 undergraduate subjects and 59 disciplines that confer doctoral or master’s degrees. Appended to the University are such training institutions as the College of Continuing Education, College of Network Education, College of Teachers and Cadres Training, the Technical and Vocational Training College, and Xi’an International Chinese College. SNNU now accommodates over 100,000 students, including 17,502 undergraduate students, 17,343 graduate students, 66,034 continuing education and online students, and 1100 international students.
