Students in Kazan develop independent projects based on their interests and their level of Russian knowledge. Recent, projects included researching the Jewish community in Kazan; interviewing local police; and learning traditional musical instruments for a performance of a fusion of Tuvan throat singing and Tatar flute music. Several recent CLS Kazan participants based their projects on volunteer experiences with local organizations such as orphanages and centers for immigrants and displaced persons.
Jacqueline Bailey-Ross (CLS Kazan 2012) graduated from Swarthmore College and was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to conduct research on the African population in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Laura Dean (CLS Kazan 2012) is conducting dissertation research in Ukraine, Latvia, and Russia on the topic of policy responses to human trafficking. Part of her research will take place at the Women's Crisis Center Fatima in Kazan, where she volunteered in 2012 during her participation in the CLS Program.
Max Hoyt (CLS Kazan 2012) graduated from Rutgers and was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to teach English in Baku, Azerbaijan.

He was awarded a Fulbright grant for the 2011-2012 academic year and is back in Kazan conducting archival research to investigate the structure, organization, and principal activities of the Tsarist secret police in the city during the years just prior to the October Revolution in 1917.
