2012 CLS students were invited by the Education USA program at the American Center to interact with local Bangladeshi students applying to US universities. The event is part of the StepWise program of Education USA, which guides students step by step through the application process. Prospective Bangladeshi students attended a special event to speak to twelve CLS students who were enrolled in 12 different programs in 12 different US universities. In the small round tables the CLS students talked directly to local students about why and how they went through the university selection process. The CLS students as student ambassadors for U.S. universities shared their experiences with Bangladeshis and promoted higher studies in the U.S.
All CLS participants design final projects related to their personal academic or professional interests. In 2012, Beginning Bangla student Erin Hunter's project on "Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC)" incorporated her Bangla language skills to explain and demonstrate the KMC process, which can significantly reduce infant mortality in Bangladesh and increase their wellbeing. Erin Hunter continued to work on a KMC project in Bangladesh after finishing her CLS program.
Todd McKay participated in the 2009 and 2010 CLS Program in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He completed a Master's degree in linguistics at the University of Utah. In 2011, he received an English Teaching Assistantship Fulbright Scholarship to work with students in learning English at a higher secondary school in Bangladesh. His focus was on helping to bridge gaps between those in the English classroom and the rest of the community. "Building relationships that endure beyond the classroom is vital for helping achieve the educational goals of Bangladesh," McKay says, "That is complicated by persistent lack of resources, but my aim is to help by creating a set of activities that can accomplish the goal while transcending material limitations."
