Program Dates

  • Beginning: No previous knowledge or study of Azerbaijani is required, up to 2 years of study or equivalent.
  • Advanced Beginning: Minimum requirements: completion of one year of college-level classes, or its equivalent, prior to the start of the program. Students should arrive in country comfortable with the script and sounds, basic vocabulary, and basic grammar.
  • Intermediate: Minimum requirements: completion of two years of college-level Azerbaijani or its equivalent, prior to the state of the program. Alternatively, students who have completed two years of college-level Turkish are eligible to apply.
  • Advanced: Minimum requirements: completion of three years of college-level Azerbaijani or its equivalent, prior to the start of the program.

Alumni Ambassadors

Student Activities

Students in Baku have the opportunity to explore Baku and learn about Azerbaijani culture through their cultural excursions and activities. In 2011, students also pursued personal interests outside of class by taking music classes and playing soccer with a local team. 2012 participants engaged in activities such as translation work for a Baku art gallery.

Alumni Highlights

Read about CLS alumna Jeiran Hasan (Baku, ’10 and ’11), who studies music at a conservatory in the U.S. and took advantage of the opportunity while in Baku to learn to play a traditional Azerbaijani instrument and learn about mugham, a form of Azerbaijani folk music.
